Beginning with bills sent out in October 2011, Florida Keys Electric Cooperative will implement changes to its retail rates. The restructuring of rates does not increase the amount of revenue collected by FKEC, but instead more fairly balances each member's contribution to the operation, maintenance and improvements of the overall system. As a result, consumers may see a small decrease or increase in their monthly bill depending on their individual power consumption. Why is FKEC Changing the Rates? Recent cost studies indicated that, over time, the Cooperative's variable rate components increased to cover fixed costs. To a small degree, this unintentionally resulted in high usage consumers subsidizing low usage consumers in the costs to operate and maintain the system. The current rate restructure is designed to provide a more equitable and fair distribution of costs among all member-consumers regardless of amount of electricity consumed. In addition, the new rate structure will provide a more accurate cost of energy. This will allow you to better assess your conservation efforts and enable FKEC to support your efforts. How are the rates changing and how does this affect my monthly bill? On your bill, the monthly fixed charge currently called "Customer Charge" will now be called "Daily System Access Charge" and will increase while your "Equity Charge" per kilowatt-hour will decrease. The average residential and small commercial consumer, who uses 1,400-1,500 kilowatt hours (kWh) per month, should not see any significant change in their monthly bill. Those using more than 1,500 kWh will see a slight decrease compared to past bills with the same consumption, while those who consume less than 1,400 kWh, will see a slight increase. Here are some numbers to help you relate your monthly bill to the restructure in our rates: If you paid $300 in October 2010 you will pay $271 in October 2011.
