August 2006...
Service to Community is Co-op Way
I received an email recently from an FKEC member in Key Largo writing to compliment the work of one of FKEC's employees. The note refers to a recent project where the Co-op facilitated the removal and replanting of a problem tree that was posing a threat to nearby power lines.
In the note, the member and business owner notes that FKEC went well out of its way to make the tree trade happen and to to assure as little disturbance to the resort grounds and guests as possible.
While I was happy to hear that one of FKEC's employees, Jason Richards, had worked well with the community and provided quality service, it reminded me that that is, essentially, why we are here.
In 1940, Florida Keys Electric Cooperative was founded by this community to serve this community, and it continues to do so today.
Like any company, the co-op is made up of people, and people are prone to make mistakes, have bad days and make errors in judgment. But I like to think that cooperative people, the ones working for this community by serving at FKEC, are not just ordinary people. They are people who understand the value of service. That understanding is illustrated not only in the tree trade story, but throughout the August issue of FKEC News.
The first article is about one of our Marathon directors, Karl Wagner. He is a third generation firefighter and was featured on the cover of the June/July issue of Key West Magazine for his 25 years of fire rescue service to our local community.
Another article is about the third annual football camp that one of our long-time Marathon employees, John Kornetti, founded and organizes every year so that local kids can have the unique opportunity to train with professional football players.
There's also a feature story about employee Barbara Mungovan, who was recently honored with FKEC's Illumination Award. Barbara, too, was recognized not for her daily work, but for her volunteer efforts and tireless service to charitable organizations, her co-workers and her community.
Sixty-five years ago, the people of this community got together and formed an electric cooperative to deliver electric power to their homes and to serve their community. Now more than six decades later, that cooperative spirit lives on in the selfless service of FKEC's dedicated directors and outstanding employees.
