Florida Keys Electric Cooperative has now restored electric service to more
than 90% of its member-consumers in the Upper and Middle Keys in the wake of
Hurricane Wilma. There are only about 2,900 of FKEC's 31,000 accounts still
waiting for restoration as of 2 p.m. today.
A portion of those still out are residents and businesses located on Duck
Key. Service to that side island is out because the distribution lines
leading to it are down over the water in six locations. FKEC has loaded a
utility bucket truck on a barge that should reach the affected poles late
this afternoon. In the mean time, FKEC is working to try to temporarily
restore service to the island.
The balance of the outages are in isolated areas from North Key Largo to
Marathon where trees and poles are down or where flood damage is more
extensive.
FKEC has nine outside repair crews from electric cooperatives in North
Florida working with its own repair crews to restore service.
FKEC serves the Upper and Middle Keys from North Key Largo to the top of the
Seven-Mile Bridge.
FKEC hopes to have all of its member-consumers restored by Saturday.
