FKEC Restores Power to More Than 99% of Consumers
Final Distribution Lines Repaired Over Water
FLORIDA KEYS - In less than five days, Florida Keys Electric Cooperative
restored electric service to all but a handful of its member-consumers in
the Upper and Middle Keys in the wake of Hurricane Wilma.
About 50 scattered outages remain, but new calls for isolated outages
continue as property owners return to the Keys.
The final distribution lines providing power to Duck Key and a few other
nearby islands were repaired over water Thursday. FKEC loaded a utility
bucket truck on a barge to reach many of the downed lines, but a few poles
could only be reached in a small boat. In these cases, a lineman climbed
the pole to reconnect the lines.
FKEC requested nine outside repair crews from four different electric
cooperatives in North Florida to work with its own crews to restore service.
FKEC is a not-for-profit electric utility serving 31,000 members in the
Upper and Middle Keys from the Monroe County Line to the top of the
Seven-Mile Bridge.
