FLORIDA KEYS ELECTRIC COOPERATIVE PRESS RELEASE

January 5th, 2006

BREAKER FAILURE CAUSES POWER OUTAGE IN ISLAMORADA

At 9:22 p.m. Jan. 4, a failed breaker in FKEC's Islamorada Substation caused a power outage that extended from approximately mile marker 87 down to the Channel 2 Bridge.

Crews responded immediately and were able to isolate the problem breaker and re-energize the substation at 10:48. The unaffected distribution lines fed by the Islamorada substation were re-energized at 10:52.

The feeder line with the failed breaker was then visually inspected by FKEC crews and no faults were found. After the inspection, power to that line was rerouted through a different substation and the line was re-energized at 11:33.

The total number of members affected by the outage was 4,980. The line with the failed breaker serves approximately 1,830 members.

At this time, power on the affected line is still being rerouted while FKEC's substation crews work to either repair or replace the failed breaker.
