FLORIDA KEYS ELECTRIC COOPERATIVE PRESS RELEASE

February 20, 2006

ACCIDENT CAUSES OUTAGE FROM TAVERNIER TO KEY WEST

At 6:30 a.m., a refrigerated truck clipped FKEC's transmission guy stub pole at mile marker 70, breaking the pole and causing the guy wire to fling up and over the transmission line.

Correct relay operation in Tavernier and Marathon cleared the line and isolated the faulted area. The resulting outage was from Snake Creek (mile marker 85.8) to Key West.

Marathon generating units were brought up, restoring service to several distribution lines out of Marathon.

FKEC crews were immediately dispatched to the scene of the accident. Once the trouble was cleared, the transmission line was re-energized at approximately 7:15 a.m., restoring service to Keys Energy Services in Key West and the Lower Keys.

All power was restored by 7:18 a.m.
