FLORIDA KEYS ELECTRIC COOPERATIVE PRESS
RELEASE
August 29, 2006
FKEC OFFICES CLOSE AT NOON
Due to Tropical Storm Ernesto, Florida Keys Electric Cooperative's offices in Tavernier and Marathon closed at noon today, August 29, and will remain closed on August 30. The offices will reopen on August 31 or as soon as conditions allow.
FKEC will staff a live call center beginning at 6 p.m. today and will also have its system operations center double-staffed at that time. In addition to the live call center, FKEC's automated outage reporting system will also be available. Members are asked to be patient if phone lines are busy. In the Upper and Middle Keys, call FKEC at 852-2431 to report outages and downed power lines.
FKEC line crews will be standing by to restore power. However, should conditions be unsafe, the crews be called in until conditions improve.
FKEC will conduct a damage assessment at first light and, based on damage to the system, will make the decision concerning the need for outside crew assistance at that time.
Residents are reminded to avoid downed power lines and exercise caution if using an emergency generator. After the storm, residents are also asked to avoid damaged areas where utility crews are working. These areas are hazardous and our crews need room to safely restore power as quickly as possible.
