OUTAGE REPORT: 11 Minute Outage in North Key Largo

On February 1 at 11:53 a.m. a pigeon contacted the A phase and ground of the Oz Moody Substation "E" feeder. The resultant fault caused an 11-minute outage in North Key Largo and Ocean Reef Club.

Under normal circumstances, the breaker would have closed automatically, however the fault also burned up the re-closing relay on the breaker. The breaker was manually closed at 12:04 p.m., restoring all power.

FKEC officials note that Ocean Reef Club would not have lost power during this incident if the needed North Key Largo Substation was in service. FKEC continues to work through the permitting process to construct this substation to better serve the North Key Largo area.
