John Kornetti Honored with "Illumination Award"
Florida Keys Electric Cooperative recently honored John Kornetti as the fifth recipient of the company's "Illumination Award."
Kornetti was selected for the award not only for performing well in his position as a Journeyman Lineman, but also for the example he sets for other employees and for his tireless dedication to the youth in the community.
"As a long-standing employee, John always sets a great example for his co-workers and new hires," said FKEC CEO Scott Newberry. "He also donates much of his free time to the community, especially to children’s programs."
Among other commitments, Kornetti founded and organizes an annual summer youth football camp in Marathon. The three-day camp focuses on teaching the fundamentals of football to children ages 7-17.
Kornetti's idea was to offer young players the chance to "train like the pros with the pros" so he started the camp in 2004 by arranging for professional football player and Marathon High School graduate Tony Bryant to help coach. He has also arranged for another Marathon High alumni, Joey Struyf, to help coach along with his university teammates from Florida International University.
Kornetti has worked at FKEC for 21 years. He began his career with the cooperative as a member of the Right-of-Way Tree Crew and then became a Groundman before entering the Apprentice Lineman Program. John completed the four-year program and earned the designation of Journeyman Lineman. He was later promoted Crew Leader in Marathon.
He lives in Marathon with his wife and two sons.
