House-to-House Inventory of Poles & Meters Moves to Key Largo

Florida Keys Electric Cooperative's contract crews performing a house-to-house inventory of all of FKEC's poles and electric meters are now working in the Key Largo area from Mile Marker 95 to 103.

Crews from Southeastern Reprographics, Inc. (SRI) will now be seen in Key Largo in a white truck with a flashing yellow light moving through neighborhoods recording the precise location of every power pole and meter. The crews may also point a large, bright yellow laser "gun" at homes or businesses to record a location using the global positioning system (GPS).

The inventory started June 25 in Marathon. The white trucks have green lettering on the door that reads "Davey Resource Group" and also carry SRI's logo and a magnetic sign indicating they are a contractor for Florida Keys Electric Cooperative.

The inventory is a critical part of the new outage reporting system being implemented by FKEC. The work involves recording FKEC's entire distribution system of more than 800 miles of overhead and underground lines from Ocean Reef to the top of the Seven Mile Bridge. The work is expected to take a year to complete.

Once complete, the mapping system will help FKEC restore power more quickly after an outage by providing the exact location of a particular pole and all of the equipment associated with the pole.

FKEC is a not-for-profit cooperative utility serving 31,000 member-consumers in the Upper and Middle Keys.
